Sadly, we have reached the stage in South Africa where we are heavily reliant on the government to support and fund us with so many aspects of our lives. Gone are the days when people had to earn what they needed and had to work hard to get what they wanted.
Our history in the Waterberg has taught us that “communities cannot and must not be lulled into reliance on politicians, political parties or formal governmental departments for the provision of many of the services we need. We must be prepared to roll up our sleeves, find the money, make the time and get down to work ourselves. In the past communities that worked together to fund, build or manage facilities also built a community spirit, a spirit that occasionally transcended divisions of gender, race or creed. If the Waterberg community is ever to prosper more opportunities for broad community cooperation must be sought and pursued.
We must be prepared to break new ground in forging new alliances with former adversaries, now current neighbours, to build new community projects together for our mutual benefit. We must relegate our differing ethnicities, religious and political affiliations, genders and languages to a subordinate status whilst celebrating the variety and depth they can add to our national culture.”

Moet Ons op die Regering Staatmaak?
Ons is ongelukkig nou op ‘n stadium in Suid-Afrika waar ons hewiglik afhanklik van die regring is vir finansiering en ondersteuning van ‘n verskeidenheid fasete van ons lewens. Die dae waar mense verdien het waarvoor hulle gewek het, en waar mens deur doelgerigte harde werk ‘n inkomste wat jy wou gehad het kon verdien, is lankal verby.
Ons geskiedenis in die Waterberg het ons geleer dat “gemeenskappe kan nie en moet nie afhanklik raak van politikuste, politieke partye or formele regerings departmente vir die voorsiening van die verskeie dienste wat ons benodig nie. Ons moet ons moue oprol, die geld self vind, tyd maak en die werk self doen. In die verlede het gemeenskappe saam gewerk om finansiering te kry, fasilitietie en dienste te bou, en te bestuur. Dit het ‘n fantastiese gemeenskaps-gees gebou wat dikwels die struikelblokke van geslag, ras en kultuur oorbrug het. As die Waterberg gemeenskap ooit wil vooruitstreef, moet ons meer geleenthede vir gemeenskaps-ontwikkeling en samewerking soek, en skep waarookal ons kan.
Ons moet bereid wees om nuwe uitdagings aan te vat, om nuwe ooreenkomste en samewerking met voormalige vyande, nou ons bure, te bewerkstellig. Nou is die tyd om nuwe gemeenskaps projekte saam aan te pak wat tot ons almal se voordeel sal wees. Ons moet ons etniese, geloofs, politiese, geslags en taal verskille in so ‘n wyse aanpas en bestuur dat dit samewerking sal aanmoedig terwyl dit op dieselfde tyd diep en ryk diversiteit en ervaring aan ons kolletiewe gemeenskaps kultuur bring.”
